COM 118 - First Year Seminar in Communication
3 Credits
This introduction to the Communication and Media Studies program provides the foundation and resources to support student success and transfer to a 4-year school to pursue a communication career. Students will be introduced to the MCC culture, resources and technology, along with success strategies and coping skills in time management, critical thinking and problem solving, personal accountability, commitment and engagement. Additional focus will be placed on writing in the discipline, information literacy, and research skills with an emphasis on developing academic, financial and career plans to meet their goals.
A student can only enroll and earn credit for one college orientation course.
Course Learning Outcomes
1.Demonstrate effective study techniques and time management skills that enhance academic performance and foster a successful college experience.
2.Develop organized written work around well-reasoned arguments across various formats that meet academic standards in communication studies.
3.Exhibit effective communication skills to connect with diverse audiences, engage in meaningful dialogues with peers and instructors, and to deliver engaging presentations.
4.Apply critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate information, , and solve problems related to communication issues.
5.Identify and practice professional behaviors, including ethics, responsibility, and collaboration, that are essential for success in the communication field.
6.Develop a comprehensive academic plan outlining the necessary steps to achieve a bachelor’s degree in communication, including course selection and extracurricular involvement.
7.Investigate various career paths within the communication field, assessing personal interests and aligning them with potential job opportunities and industry trends.
8.Create a financial plan that outlines strategies for funding educational goals, including budgeting, financial aid options, scholarships, and potential part-time employment.
